Horror is the genre in fiction that is supposed to make you feel scared or unnerved by what the writer has showcased you, but horror can be many things to make you feel unnerved, like slasher horror, Slasher is where someone at least a little human, hutns down other people to kill them and more, this genre is popularized by films like "Halloween", "Nightmare on Elm Street", "Friday the 13th", "Scream", and much more. Or psychological where instead the idea or at least the mental state that find it scary, like "The Shining", where a family goes to a haunted mansion while each of their minds witness the horror of what happened but they react differently, or "Misery", where a writer is found by a fan of his but the fan is so obsessed with him and attempts to make him stay and manipulate him while his legs are broken, this type of horror popularized by Edgar Allan Poe. Following this with many more horror types like Supernatural where the main characters expierience paranormal things around someone or a haunted house, with movies like "The Conjuring", "The Exorcist", "Insidious", and much more; or Monster horror movies where a being that is neither human or animal starts haunting down the main characters, like movies like "Alien" with the Xenomorphs, or "It" with Pennywise the dancing clown.
But what about movies currently, some horror movies are loved but some are hated, but one director has recently had made horror movies more popular with his beautiful cinemetography and horror writing he has given to these movie; Zach Cegger is that director, 45 years old, who is a comedian, film director, and actor, he had movies before these 3 but these horror movies had sparked him in popularity and had truly changed many horror fans.
Barbarian released September 9th, 2022. Barbarian is a rated R, Horror/Mystery film that lasts 1 hour and 43 minutes, with a 7/10 on IMDB, 92% on Rotten Tomatoes, and 3.4/5 On Letterbox.
This movie in the beginning shows a young lady named Tess, played by Georgina Champbell, visiting Detroit and decides to rent a Airbnb, which is also lived by a man named Keith, played by the very popular horror icon, Bill Skarsgard, famous for playing Pennywise in the "It" Franchise. While hesitant at first, Tess warms up to Keith, but one day when he is away, she goes down to the basement and finds disgusting room, when confronting Keith, he goes to explore himself but is killed right front of Tess from a creature, but then the story changes as we now meet a man named AJ, played by another horror and popular actor, Justin Long, known for playing in Tusk and Jeepers Creepers, is accused of sexaul assult and to live somewhere a bit, chooses the same Airbnb from Keith and Tess, but when there, he also explores the basement and finds Tess. The movie explores the horror below in the basement, as the movie also shows of how the creature was also a young lady that was mistreated by a man down there named Frank, played by Richard Brake, who is responsibile for many sexual assult cases. This movie is the highlights the most is the stages of Misogyny, Keith has a chilvery thought process, thinking that he knows best, but is still rooted in just wanting to help Tess and be nice, even if he is trying to act like the "Good Guy", he is at least the msot safe here. AJ is definetely more dangerous then Keith because he understands that he is doing wrong but he does try to become better, even if he tries to make himself not as the villain until realizing his actions, like an almsot everyday Misogyny, but in the end, he was still a terrible guy, reflecting on the ending in which running from the creature, he tries to sacrifice Tess to save himself but he is instead kiled; and finally, Frank is easily the most dangerous as he is shown to be disgusting for his actions he had done to people and and does not regret it, and when confronted, he instead goes the cowardly way out instead of taking his actions into consideration.
Barbarian is the first horror film that had boosted Zach Cegger into popularity, but out of the three movies in this list, is the least loved but still, a film loved for its writing and eerie and disgusting plot and characters.
Weapons released August 8th, 2025. Weapons is rated R, Horror/Mystery film as well as Barbarian, it lasts 2 hours and 9 minutes, with a 7.4/10 on IMDB, 93% on Rotton Tomatoes, and 3.6/5 on Letterbox.
This films begings with telling the watcher that in Maybrook Elementary School students at night were running out in the road and had just dissapeared, with only one student in that class, showing the parents accusing the teacher of kidnapping them. The teacher is Justine Gandy, played by Julia Garner, and where we first see the point of view from her, on how people accuse her, how she tried to interact with the only student now, named Alex, but how she also meets up with her ex who is a cop, named Paul Morgan, played by Aiden Ehrenreich, but soon then, when she is tacked by the principal in a store, the point of perspective changes to the father of one of the students, Archer Graff, played by Josh Brolin, famous for playing in The Goonies, No Country For Old Men, and Thanos in Avengers: infinty War. We see the guilt and loss the father has, but also we see more on how he interacts with others and trying to figure out what happens to his son, but also at the store where Justice is tackled, the POV changes once more to next Paul, where we see his affair with Justine, and his job, where we see when checking on a homeless boy, struck by a needle, in anger, attacking the boy, how he tries to continue his life even though it appears down hill, but we even get the Point of view of the homeless man, James, played by Austin Abrahams, on how he is correlated to the story not only of Paul, but also that he has seen what happens at Alex's house and how his parents seem in a comotosed body, but then when arrested, James takes Paul to Alex's house, and when Paul goes in alone, Paul comes out violent and drags James, thats again once more when the perspective changes; This time now to the Principal, Macrus Miller, played by Benedict Wong, we see his perspective but also we get introduced to Alex's aunt, Gladys, and when she comes over to Marcus and his husband's house, she seems to do a mini ritual which mind controls Marcus to kill his husband and leave and go after Justine, which when he does attack her, and she drives away, he is hit by a car.
But then finally comes to the perspective of Alex, where we see that Aunt Gladys who came by has started mind controlling his parents and that she was the one responsible on why his classmates leave their homes, and finally it all comes to one as Justine and Archer go to Alex's house where they attacked by mind controlled James and Paul, which James and Paul are killed, but then Alex helps by using the same ritual for his classmates to attack and kill Gladys. This film though is supposed to be an allagory for grief, as in each POV of the character represent that, Justine is shame and guilt, Archer is blame and resentment, Paul is defeat and relapse, James is isolation and infection, Marcus is acceptance, where each is the perspective of a devastating event happening and the reactions to it, while Alex is the trauma he deals with is when a child is not helped by a force that should; This movie heavy on this as it also represents strong allagories for School Shootings since of the title and showing of firearms.
The most recent of his movies, Resident Evil released September 18th, 2026. Resident Evil is rated R, Horror/Sci-fi film that lasts 1 hour and 37 minutes, with a 7.7/10 on IMDB, 96% on Rotten Tomates, and 3.6/5 on Letterbox.
This films shows a man named Bryan, played by the same guy in Weapons, by Austin Abrahams, as Bryan find himself in a T-Virus outbreak as he has to escape the infected while carrying the supplies to make a cure, althoguh this movie would mostly be a comedy, with Bryan swearing a lot in his situation and not holding back trying to leave, but this movie is based on the popular video game series of same name, although in that one, the protagonist can depend like Leon Kennedy, Ada Wong, and more, and Bryan is only a protagonist in the movie. This film thought, with the help of the monsters, is supposed to be an allegory for fear of fatherhood, losing on indivisuallity, and running away from the responsibilites you must hold as adult, as Bryan throughout the film, this fits Bryan throughout the entire film as, in the beginning of the movie, Bryan's girlfriend gives birth as now Bryan has to now take the responsibilites as a father but still taking a job to send the cure, and his determination to push through this apocalypse and get the cure back to the scientists, although in the adventure, he is bitten and he holds back as long as he could before finally reaching the scientists, and he is turned into a monster infront of the cure, which he looses his identity, and kills. The shortest of all of his films and the only so far that is based off a living copyright, but still, this is Zach Cegger's highest rated horror film.
So far with all the three horror films that Zach Cegger has made, these three horror films has spotlighted him as currently one of the best horror directors, his films easily showing that, with not just directing, but writing from him as each one is layered and detailed, some from his own personal life like Weapons, and it seems as with each film he makes, the better they are rated, so if Zach decides to continue creating horror films, he could be one of the best horror directors in history.
